Warsaw - SGM (United States Army Ret) Willie J. Gavin, Jr. 83 peacefully crossed the shores of time Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the home of his daughter.
"BoBo" as he was affectionally called by family and friends is the son of the late Willie J. Gavin Sr. and Alberta Southerland Gavin. He was born in Duplin County on May 18, 1940.
Sergeant Major Willie J. Gavin Jr., a true American hero who dedicated his life in service to our nation. For three decades, Sergeant Major Gavin exemplified the highest ideals of courage, dedication, and selflessness as a proud member of the United States Army.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sergeant Major Gavin's bravery and valor were unparalleled. His unwavering commitment to duty was evident in every action he took, earning him a list of military honors that speaks volumes to his exemplary service. From the “Jump Master” Best of the Best Parachutist, Bronze Star medal to the Purple Heart, the Air Medal to the Army Commendation, each accolade is a testament to his sacrifice and devotion to protecting our freedoms. Sergeant Major Gavin's service extended far beyond the battlefield. He embodied the values of integrity, honor, and leadership, inspiring those around him to strive for excellence. His leadership was marked by compassion and humility, earning him the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. He leaves to cherish loving memories to his wife, Geraldine Carlton Gavin of the home; three children, Jimmie A. Gavin of Raleigh, Craig A. Gavin of Minnesota and Terry A. Gavin of Fayetteville; seven grandchildren, Talisha Gavin, Carl Green, Saible Pressley, Taylor Gavin, Natasha Groce, Rashawn Carroll and Terrence Emanuel ; several great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
