Warsaw - Mrs. Arlene Stokes, 87 of 2456 W NC 24., departed this earthly life on Monday, June 22, 2020 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville.
She is the daughter of the late Ruth R. Shaw and Orlander Page and was born in Brunswick County on July 30, 1932.
Mrs. Stokes was raised in Warsaw and graduated from Warsaw Douglass High School in 1950 and was second in her class. She graduated from Fayetteville State University in 1954 with a Bachelor’s in Education, while at Fayetteville State University, she was one of the charter members of AKA Sorority - Delta Alpha and earned a Master’s in Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1960.She began teaching elementary school in 1955 at Branch Elementary School, and later taught at Warsaw Elementary School, and worked as a teacher for more than thirty years. She married Jeremiah Stokes in 1960, and their union continued until his death in 1973. She joined St, Stephen AME Zion Church as a child when her grandfather was its pastor and remained a member for over 70 years until her death. She was actively involved in the life of the church serving as Secretary of the Trustee Board and singing in the Senior Choir. She was also a member of Golden Jewel Chapter Number 71 of the Order of Eastern Star, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Douglass High School Alumni and Friends, and the Fayetteville State University Alumni Association. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her grandparents, Simon Peter and Hattie Hill, her foster parents and aunt and uncle Frances and Laurence Levingston, and foster siblings, Ethel Brown and Paul Laurence Levingston. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Myrteen Levingston of Indianapolis, her nephews, Johnny Roy Stokes of Washington D.C.,Kenneth Brown of Philadelphia, PA, Deon Levingston (Angela) of Indianapolis, IN, Paul Levingston (Crystal) of Indianapolis, and Luttrell Levingston (Christine Gale) of Berkley, Michigan, great-nephew Sampson Levingston, great-nieces, Ashley, Brittney, Danielle, Allison, Claire, Mina, and Nora Levingston, and many treasured cousins. Mrs. Stokes is also survived by numerous godchildren and a community of friends that were like family to her.
