Washington, DC/ Mt. Olive - Mr. Charles Ray Kornegay, was born on July 13, 1944, in Mt. Olive, NC, to the late Johnnie Lou and Roosevelt Lee Kornegay Sr. After a long battle with colon cancer, he peacefully transitioned to eternal rest at his home in Washington, DC, on Thursday, July 2, 2026. He also maintained a home at in Mt. Olive, which he visited often.
Affectionally known as Charles Ray, Dad, Big Guy, and King Charles, he graduated from Carver High School in Mt. Olive, North Carolina, in 1963. He was a former Freemason and an active member of the Carver Alumni and Friends Association, Mt. Olive Chapter. A devoted Washington Redskins --- now Washington Commanders --- fan, Charles proudly wore his team cap wherever he went and often talked at length about the season even with his doctors. Raised at St. James Disciples Church in Mt. Olive, he remained active there when he returned home and also visited Holy Ghost Cathedral and Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. In Washington, DC, he attended Southern Friendship Baptist Church with his wife, Peggy Jean Kornegay and visited The Temple of the Living Epistle, Inc.
Shortly after graduating from Carver High School, he and his sweetheart, Peggy Jean Armwood, moved to Washington, DC, in 1968, where they later married and raised two children, Dupree and Genene. Charles worked for Metro before joining Pepco Electricity Company, where he served for 30 years before retiring.
Cherished memories will remain in the hearts of his family, including his children, Genene Kornegay Bess (Brian) and Dupree Kornegay (Lisa), both of Washington, DC; Mitchell Ray Anderson (Shvonne) of Clayton, NC; Veronica Abdul-Kareem (Hassan) of Scottsdale, AZ and Veronica Moore Evans (Kirby) of Wendell, NC. He is also survived by his siblings, James "Deek" Kornegay (Sheryl) of Rochester, NY; Johnny "Jody" R. Kornegay (Carrie) of Dudley, NC, Jeffery Dean Kornegay and Mary Durham both of Mt. Olive, NC; Roosevelt L. Kornegay Jr. (Connie) of Washington, DC; Ginger Gale Kornegay of Bowie, MD; Charlie Kornegay of Chester, FL and Shirley Martin and Ronnie Kornegay both of Mt. Olive, NC; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy J. Armwood Kornegay; his parents, Roosevelt Lee Kornegay Sr. and Johnnie Lou Kornegay; and his siblings, Jean Esther Williams, Alfonso Kornegay, David Earl Kornegay, Cornell Kornegay, Richard Kornegay, Montel Kornegay, Eugene Kornegay and Shirley McKinney (Wilder).
Charles will live on in our hearts through the cherished memories we hold.
