Born in Sampson Co., he is the son of the late Lessie Mae Oates.

Left to cherish his memories is his loving wife, Virginia; sons, Jimmy Lee Jr. and Eric Oates; daughters, Miranda Bryant and Jalesisa Smith; four stepsons, brothers, Deacon Henry Oates (Deaconess Doreen), Bennie Oates (Sonya) and Elder Ronnie Oates (Sister Tiffany); sisters, Alice Oates Acheampong, Geraldine Howard, Gennie Owens and Peggy Colman; 11 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends,

In addition to his mother, he has been reunited with his brothers, David L. Oates, Willie C. Oates, Harry Oates and Joe L. Oates, sisters, Annie M. Oates, Loraine Freeman and Eva Bell.
