Rev. Woodrow Grandy, Sr. Obituary

Mt. Olive - Woodrow Grandy, Sr. “Momma’s baby” (Peck) age 85, traveled to his Heavenly Home on MARCH 15TH, 2018 AT 5:10 AM following a courageous battle with dementia in which he suffered for many years.  While the disease impaired his thought processes and judgements at times, and ultimately lead to his inability to walk, hear, or take care of himself, Woodrow Grandy Sr. remained faithful until his last breath in lifting up the name of our only wise Savior.  He was born the thirteenth child of Albert and Tommy Ann Whitfield Grandy and was a lifelong resident of Wayne County.  He was schooled in Wayne County Schools and later worked until retirement in 1999 from Brogden Middle School in Dudley, NC.

Woodrow Grandy wore many hats and his presence meant so much to people.  He genuinely met no strangers and wouldn’t mind telling others of the goodness of the Lord.  He was a musician, farmer, enjoyed working in the yards, and being in the company of family and friends.  He also was a gifted musician and played for several churches up until his later years.   Whether having a guitar in his hands, a tambourine, a harmonica, or his prize instrument of choice the piano, it didn’t take long for “Reverend Grandy “ as some avowedly called him, to get happy singing and playing uplifting the name of the Lord.   At an early age he gave his life to the Lord and joined Saint John Free Will Baptist Church.   He was a faithful member and held many positions within the church and district until God called him to the work of Pastor.  He served as Pastor of Best Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Indian Springs, NC, McCoy’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, Snow Hill, NC and Jumping Run Free Will Baptist Church, La Grange, NC.  In his later years he traveled upon retirement of pastoral duties extensively evangelizing, rendering services through music to other churches, and eventually being led by the Holy Spirit to draw closer to his own family, he joined New Saints Delight United Holy Church in Mount Olive, NC.

Woodrow Grandy was married to the love of his life Mother Mary Allen Grandy.  To this union four children were brought up and born, being raised in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.  Woodrow loved his family his wife, three sons, one daughter, in-laws and his heart was his grands and great-grands.  He was especially proud that following God’s call and after his footsteps he had two sons and a daughter who were all ordained Elders in the church, one grandson, and two grandsons serving as ordained deacons.  His heart was full and he often prophesied that many more was to come in the future if his family would just obey God!

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Grandy, a son Jimmy Allen, Sr., granddaughter Priscilla Grandy, grandson Jimmy Allen Jr., six brothers, and four sisters.

He leaves to cherish his memory:  Sons Elder Woodrow Grandy, Jr. (Evangeline) Dudley, NC, Elder Cincarlton Grandy (Narail) Fayetteville, NC, Daughter Elder Sonjia Grandy Russell (Deacon Billy) Mount Olive, NC, Daughter n Law Geraldine Allen, Dudley, NC. Sisters Eldress Naomi Grandy Carraway, Dudley, NC and Wyoming Grandy, Long Island, New York, nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, brother n laws Edward “Pistol” Allen (Stella) Greenevers, NC, Ralph (Carolyn) Allen, Goldsboro, NC,  sister n law Shirley Allen Hornsby, Wilmington, NC, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends including two special nephews who visited him frequently Reverend Eugene Grandy and Ervin Grandy.
