Born in Wayne Co., he is the son of the late Leroy and Pearlie Armwood Simmons and husband of the late Gracie Coley Simmons.

Loving memories will linger in the hearts of his children, Sherelene Simmons Braswell, Reginald Antonio (Millicent) Simmons and Sharon Simmons all of Goldsboro and Patricia Washington of South Carolina; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Christine (James) Monk of Fayetteville and Barbara Richardson of Tennesse and a host of other relatives and friends,
